THE B'LAAN CULTURE ....."The B'laan Festival of Pula Bato, Tampakan"

The B'laan culture is one of the most colorful and exotic tribes in Mindanao.  Barangay Pula Bato is a portion of Tampakan, were the B'laans are exceedingly timid and most industrious people.  Their language is characterized by the possession of letter "F".  B'laans are noted for their intricate indigenous art, their tribal hand woven and with embroidery or cotton with intricate bead works, wearing brass bangles and bells as part of their personal finery.  Bracelets of decorated brass hands are common as well as beaded necklaces and brass belts are the symbols of ethnic pride reflected of their rich cultural heritage.

 B'laans are said to have originated from the Malayan people.  The B'laan tribe is one of the eighteen non-Muslim minority ethnic groups, now inhabiting the Island of Mindanao.  The B'laans are claimed to be third largest group in Mindanao.  In Pula Bato, Tampakan, South Cotabato, the B'laans comprise 15% of the population estimated at 5,000 individuals.

Most ethnic communities, the B'laan possess an ancient culture that distinguishes them from other group and are proudly independent people who values their culture and traditions.  Their unique heritage, gives and aspiration, through sustainable  agricultural practices.

The B'laan heritage take center stage in the Pula Bato festival, with the cultural dance which is the "Maral" the traditional dance of the B'laans.  The event was performed in barangay Pula Bato, with a unique playground and was highlighted by the tradirional background of the traditional hand woven and with indigenous arts.  Also reenacted by the officials of the B'laan tribal councils and town officials.

The dance extravaganza will be focus in royal indigenous dances accompanied by the gongs, B'laan guitar, with ethnics attires as performed depict B'laan lifestyle and intricate native tapestry.  B'laan festival high lights the prevention of the B'laan heritage, customs and traditions through cultural presentations.

More importantly, the festivity of Pula Bato as the barangay of harmony, where people lives in unity, cultural and religious background.  The festivity will also highlight it's economic strides, major producing of corn, bananas, rice, abac
a and coconuts, in Barangay Pula Bato, Tampakan, South Cotabato, island of  Mindanao, Philippines.

Maral.....the B'laan dance is often performed when the authority of the fulong or datu has been held in trust and marital status to assume the responsibility of the pass the status of fulong on his son. These ceremonies, which formally recognized the power, authority, status and prestige of the new fulong. The occasion of great celebration attended by fulong and sates from all the surrounding of the community. Ceremonies or occasions of great celebration, enhanced by traditional dancing and the music of gongs and guitar with has two string guitar like instrument. During the ceremonies the fulong and woman dressed in traditional ethnics traditional attires. Men and woman has been dancing in ceremonies or occasions.

  2. Faglung....or B'laan guitar which has two strings guitar like instrument in the ceremonies or occasions. Which are primary used as musical instrument and used in accompany with dance during marriage ceremony and other occasions. It produces a sounds of music of the rhythm of ancient. It is made of carve wood with two strings. Men and woman can used this during the occasions or ceremonies.

  3. Falimak....or Brass Gongs.... a musical instrument...music of the gongs sound out the rhythms of ancient relationships between the earth and the B'laan people for the cultural heritage. Brass gongs serve as musical instruments or means of sounding out the community to gather for meeting or a warning signal for intruders....

  4. Albang ansif.....or B'laan blouse....traditional items of B'laan material culture, worn by the B'laan woman on special occasions. The B'laan, blouse, which usually contain intricate patterns sewn, with brightly colored thread into the back, front and arms of the garment....

    Balesoe.....or bracelets....made of brass or beaded bracelets used by the B'laans woman during the occasions or ceremonies.....

    Utob .....or scarf...orhandkewrchief....made of colorful striped cloth used by men to ver his head for any occasions or ceremonies or daily used......

  9. B'laan abal....or... abaca.....a species of wild banana, grows abundantly in many parts of Mindanao. B'laan textiles differ in designs, motifs and range of weaving and dyeing ethnics....
